     One of our recent development contracts involved custom MIB-based management module developement for  Concord Spectrum. Some of the manufacturers involved are:

It is possible that this area becomes a placeholder for tools relating to this area. For basic network SNMP polling in a DOS environment, we have released a free DOS / Windows / DJGPP / Watt32 port of Net-SNMP available for download.

The Benefit of Standards

     During several years of recent experience in Engineering & IT fields, I have discovered a common quest: the wheel. There is an English saying, that if someone is re-inventing an already existing idea, that they are “re-inventing the wheel”. Unfortunately, a good share of engineering software does just that. I once had an interesting discussion with a member of a large company's internal software-support team. He enthusiastically related to me a short description of a program he was developing. “It will be a scripting language for a couple simple NC controllers.” I was wondering why he didn't use Python, instead.

     Using an already proven and established open source language like Python offers enormous advantages to developers. It is stable. It is flexible. It is portable. It is supported. It is a standard... a standard that pays. For those in need of a flexible DOS (or Windows)-based scripting language for PCs, I recommend trying PythonD, available on this website.
